Welcome to the Practice of Dr Kwame Larbi

Dr Kwame Larbi is a specialist gynaecologist and obstetrician who consults from his private practice located at the Park Lane Netcare Hospital, Parktown, Johannesburg. Dr Larbi qualified at the University of Ghana and completed his post graduate studies at the Wits University. Dr Larbi has been providing the residents of Johannesburg with general gynaecology and obstetric services for the past 10 years.

Dr Larbi practices in two specialties, gynaecology as well as obstetrics which means that he would consult with a patient before, during, and after pregnancy to ensure that the newborn is healthy and in good shape. Gynaecology and obstetrics are two separate fields of specialty but the two go hand in hand and in the past expectant mothers would have been referred to a gynaecologist by her GP and her gynaecologist would ultimately refer her to an obstetrician to handle the birth and assist with infant care after the child was born.

Fibroids:

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that develop throughout a woman’s child-bearing years. The risk factors include family history, obesity and the early onset of puberty in a young girl. Signs like heavy menstrual bleeding along with pelvic pain get overlooked because they are deemed as a regular part of the menstrual cycle. .

Sterilization:

This is a procedure that is done for women who are certain to have completed their families and childbirth. It is done by removing the woman’s fallopian tubes. Sterilization is permanent and irreversible, therefore should be carefully thought out. It is very safe and effective for prevention of future pregnancies. It is done by laparoscopy (minimal invasive surgery) with no scar, minimal pain and quick recovery (1-2 weeks) and has no long term effects.

What Causes Recurrent Miscarriage?

The problem causing repeated miscarriages may be in the mother, father, fetus, or placenta.
In the mother, common problems that cause repeated miscarriages include
Abnormalities in the uterus or cervix, such as polyps, bands of scar tissue (adhesions), and cervical insufficiency
Chromosome disorders.
Poorly controlled chronic disorders, such as an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease. If women have a disorder that causes blood to clot too easily (such as antiphospholipid syndrome), they may have repeated miscarriages that occur after 10 weeks of pregnancy, The reason may be blood clots that damage the placenta and thus decrease the flow of nutrients from the mother to the fetus.

It is a painful disorder that happens when the endometrium, the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, grows outside it. The tissue will act like regular uterine tissue during the menstrual period: it will break apart and bleed at the end of the cycle.
